New York City’s finest have embarked on a new safety project to rid the streets of those deemed mentally ill.
This sentence is full of little programmes. First is the description of NYPD as "New York City's finest". This defines the 'hero' of this piece. Second is the phrase "safety project" which describes the action that the heroes are undertaking. Third is the phrase "rid the streets of those deemed mentally ill" which describes the function of the "safety project".
Now. A couple of questions spring to mind.
1. Why do "the streets" need to be cleared of the mentally ill?
2. How many mentally ill people are on these streets?
3.Who 'deems' what a mental illness is and who is mentally ill?
4. How do we know that these mentally ill people pose a safety risk?
5. On what basis is it justifiable for these mentally ill people to be denied 'due process'?
Police -no longer "New York City's finest", armed with a list of most-wanted mentally ill and a high-tech tracking system, are scouring the streets for suspects who are not taking their court-ordered medicine, and forcibly dragging them to hospitals, according to a report in the New York Post.
A few more questions:
Is New York the only city that has a "most wanted mentally ill" list? If not, then who else? Where is this list published? What is this "high-tech tracking system"? What is "court-ordered medicine"? Why drag someone to hospital if they are not physically ill and not consenting?
The city’s new policy -corprate policy- comes on the heels of two subway deaths in which the victims were pushed onto the tracks by mentally ill suspects, according to the Post.
Since when is a suspect guilty of anything?
Are all these people being hunted by "New York City's finest" suspected of the aforementioned crime or is that incident being used as leverage to test out this high-tech equipment and assault innocent people that have been labelled as 'mentally ill'.
IS THIS A PRECURSOR TO THE POLICE USING THIS HIGH-TECH EQUIPMENT ON INNOCENT PEOPLE IN THE FUTURE?
