RUSSIA TO SPY ON OLYMPIC ATHLETES

The Age Wednesday, October 9, 2013

Russia has installed an all-encompassing surveillance system at the site of next year's Winter Olympics in Sochi that will allow security services to listen in on athletes and vistitors. Known as SORM, the system was developed by the Soviet-era KGB, predecessor of the FSB special services, in the mid-1980's. It has been updated in recent years. SORM will give Russian security services free access to all phone and internet communications at the Games in February without the providers' knowledge.

Some of the most interesting and relevant stories are in different sections than you'd normally expect. This one was in the sports section where a lot more programming goes on than people realise. This technology is something we need to be across, in particular, understanding who is using it, and for what purpose it is being used. Could it be already be in use in the so-called 'free' western imperialist world? Something to think about.
